Grooveshark Loves You!

by Ben Westermann-Clark April 27th, 2009

A Sunday evening special, one night only. Live from Grooveshark. This one goes out to all of our friends and fellow music-lovers.

grooveshark loves you! from ben westermann-clark on Vimeo.

i was at a party and we couldn’t choose
girl talk or some funky blues;
screw the limitations of the host’s itunes
i pulled up grooveshark and we started groovin too.

the internet ain’t like an pirate cruise
information spreads faster than swine flu,
but there’s sharks in the water who’ll swim with you
and help you just get in the groove.

like a best friend we’re just here to help
we got more records than michael phelps
so if you’re at your computer, want some music and don’t know what to do
we’re here for you

my best friend called me the other day
she wanted to hear some music, did i know a way
to get the songs she wanted but not have to pay?
i just said groove s h a r k

so if you’re a music lover or you’re in a band,
help out the ears of all the fans.
upload your music and in a short timespan
it’ll spread all over the land

now a special word to our best friends:
whytheam, mileless, and ninjen,
jiolasa, patdryburgh, and fastest963
princessleah7x, jdog90, pianowizzy
if i left you out don’t feel wronged,
there’s just only so much room in this song

Grooveshark Goes to China!

by Ben Westermann-Clark April 27th, 2009

Music is a dish best served everywhere–with as little trouble as possible. And a super-amazing friend of Grooveshark, Jayfantsy, was kind enough to translate Grooveshark into Chinese.

We’re working on getting Grooveshark translated into as many different languages as we can, so if you’ve got some linguistic superpower, be sure to let us know! Leave a comment, or shoot us an email!

As always, tons of love. Especially to Jayfantsy.

beauty in everything

by Ben Westermann-Clark March 19th, 2009

i inadvertently forgot to logout of tumblr with a new account i recently started. since i hadn’t chosen anyone to follow, tumblr filled my feed with random posts from random users all across tumblr. this picture was in my feed: yes

it struck me, and i posted to twitter as @grooveshark: ‘the world is beautiful’ and a link to the photo. secret bridge messages.

i had a conversation earlier *also* over twitter, when twitter search revealed that @derekmcclain had asked his twitter-followers if anyone had an opinion on grooveshark vs. those other guys–a secret bridge message. we talked, very graciously.

a few hours later (just now) i found that our talk had inspired connection in derek, and posted about it in his blog. “it’s funny how everything ties together”–a secret bridge message. the photo i randomly connected with felt like the connection he had over our conversation felt like the connection i had with those two things “tying together”.

the last line of his blog post refers to the power of twitter. So does this one.

Why, Thank You!

by Ben Westermann-Clark November 11th, 2008

We weren’t sure you’d noticed our makeover! If something seems different, it’s because we’ve added a section for advertisement in Grooveshark.

As always, our impetus is to bring you the easiest and coolest way to listen to music online–without that, we’ve no reason to be here!

In order for us to keep food in our hungry shark-bellies, we’ve decided to take on some space in Grooveshark to let us keep bringing you free music. We don’t mind doing it so that we can all enjoy the tunes, and we hope you won’t either!

Let us know what you think, and we love you.

UPDATES: Adding Songs to The Grooveshark

by Ben Westermann-Clark August 26th, 2008

In order to keep adding tons of new tracks to Grooveshark, we’re going to be making some optimizations tonight between 12 AM and 4 AM EST. Things probably won’t go hay-wire, but we’re finding it’s often harder to predict problems than you expect!

A small number of songs (and images) may be offline for a bit (between 12 AM and 4 AM EST), but overall you probably won’t notice any difference.

Scarce Sounds

by Ben Westermann-Clark August 22nd, 2008

Marq Vanderlaan’s Scarce Sounds

Hello. My name is Marq Vanderlaan and this is a new Grooveshark exclusive blog series called Scarce Sounds. Grooveshark’s song library is big, but doesn’t have everything. I travel the world hiking jungles, climbing mountains and following the sacred legends to discover music few have ever heard. Then I post it on Grooveshark. You may ask, who am I and why do I risk my life? I’ve been asking myself those same questions. Some call me crazy, but I can’t image doing anything else.
Last week a new uncontacted tribe was discovered near the Brazil-Peru boarder. Photo images and more about this new tribe can be found at http://www.survival-international.org/news/3340. Their passion and mystery fills each photograph.

Who are these people? What kind of music do they make? Every culture in the world makes unique music that defines them as a people. If I could hear their music, I could dive into their souls and discover who they are. I rushed to the airport to board the first flight to Lima, Peru. It’s been 8 years since my last trip to Peru–last time I did a piece on Machu Pichu.

From Lima I caught a bus to the base of the Andes Mountains.

The rugged mountain terrain made traveling slow, but 3 days later I was at the edge of the rain forest with my cassette recorder and a Quechuan guide named Acquefrita. The plan: a week’s hike to the heart of the rainforest to record the music of this previously unknown tribe for the first time. Trying not to make actual contact, for my modern world diseases would kill them; I let the mountains echo their music. This was what I heard:

Undiscovered Music…

So what title does one place on this song? A song that has been playing through these forests for millennium by a tribe whose name is still unknown. The only thing I could think to call it was a scarce sound.

Don’t be taken an advantage of,
Marq Vanderlaan
