Wednesday Report: Grooveshark Updates

by Ben Westermann-Clark June 25th, 2008

Some quick updates on goings-on for the past couple of days:

1) Caching is back up - We’ve reimplemented caching (finally) of your content via Sharkbyte. The benefits: you can travel anywhere and have your songs available for streaming, from any computer; bandwidth from your personal internet connection saved, as we’ll host future downloads for you (and you’ll still get compensated); and eventually moving all of the songs over into Grooveshark Lite and Tinysong, expanding the catalog of songs available by adding your own.

Everything’s looking pretty good so far, but if you see anything funky, be sure to let us know.

2) We got Ddos’ed! - For the past couple of early mornings, Grooveshark has been hit pretty hard by some mysterious zombie traffic. Fortunately, it’s only happening between about 2 AM and 7 AM EST, but between those hours things have been getting seriously slow. So for you nighthawks using Grooveshark while working (or playing) late, this is why–and we’re working on figuring out exactly what/who/why it’s happening.

3) Advertising? - You may have noticed small text ads appearing in the bottom footer of Grooveshark Lite. Don’t worry, we haven’t sold out to the man–we’re only selling small text ads to help support the dream: listening to whatever song you want, when you want.

If you hate it and philosophically resent us, let me know. On the other hand, if you’re interested in advertising on Grooveshark, hit us up! We’re more than happy to see what we can do for you.

That’s it so far this week! I’ll keep you posted on anything else that comes about, but until then, keep listening and keep in touch!

Expected Errors Tonight: 11PM - 6AM

by Ben Westermann-Clark June 16th, 2008

Just a quick update:

In an effort to sort out all the madness from earlier today, we’re going to be making some small, helpful changes to some business on the backend tonight. Though caching is temporarily disabled, we do expect that some images within Grooveshark may be displayed improperly between 11 PM and 6 AM (EST) tonight.

Hopefully everything will be back to normal (well, as normal as things get around here) by morning.

Scheduled Maintenance Tonight: 11PM - 6AM

by Ben Westermann-Clark June 4th, 2008

We’ll be donning our hard-hats and making some updates to some (pretty important) parts of the Grooveshark Torture Apparatus database tonight between 11 PM and 6 AM. After the updates, you should see improvements to load times while navigating through Grooveshark–which is good. During 11 and 6, however, we’ll have to take streaming offline, so songs won’t be available for listening–which is bad.

We’re working as hard as we can to get everything on Grooveshark speedy, stable, and stupendously useful, but if you ever have any requests or notice something isn’t working for you, please please please let us know.

Broadcast!

Since everyone here at Grooveshark has an Amy Winhouse-esque addiction to Twitter, we couldn’t help but be another web company incorporating our features with the undeniably useful communication provided by our favorite micro-blogging site. Now, whenever you’re listening to a song within Grooveshark Beta, you can broadcast that song to your Twitter or Pownce accounts. Just check out the player, and click “Broadcast”.

Turns in to:

Peter Gabriel!

We’re working on getting stored credentials (for Twitter), incorporation into Grooveshark Lite, and automatically sending a Tinysong link to your tweet–all in the future!

Update: Just for clarification, this will be getting put on the website soon, but isn’t
live yet–sorry for any confusion!

What’s That Song? A Tiny One!

by Ben Westermann-Clark May 30th, 2008

OK, not to keep tooting our own horn or anything, but we just launched TinySong to help with all your music-sharing needs. Type in the name of pretty much any song, and we’ll give you a short link that you can send to your friends. Once they click, they’re taken right to the song, where they can listen to their heart’s content.

It’s pretty much like tinyurl, but on the other end is a song for your (or your friends’) listening pleasure. My favorite use so far is for Twitter or instant messenger (below), but if you can think of any other cool uses for it, I’d love to hear them!

Using TinySong

I’m listening to “Apple Blossom” by the White Stripes right now. Check it out!
