It never ceases to amaze me how attentive certain audiences can be to quiet music. This year’s Capitol Hill Block Party found legions of boozed up hipsters watching Fleet Foxes elegant set without so much as a murmur. Of course, when the set you’re watching is as good as Fleet Foxes, it’s almost impossible to even consider interrupting.

We’ve been playing their first full length LP at the office for the last couple of months, so when I saw Robin Pecknold walking down the street I felt obligated to request an interview. By request an interview I mean “bumrushed him and probably freaked him out a little bit”, but what’s the difference? Because the interview is done off the cuff, the questions kind of reflect that. However, we did talk about the new songs he’s been writing which are apparently “more bombastic” and feature heavier guitars. Check out the video of our interview in front of the scenic backdrop of a random garage that was coincidentally across the street from where Fleet Foxes video for “White Winter Hymnal” was created. Check it out…

Camp Bisco 7: Brought to You by Apple Inc. (Remix)

by Grace Stainback July 24th, 2008

At Camp Bisco this past weekend, I used a carrot to spread peanut butter on my sandwiches. I drank water from a fountain that I was later told (by one of the staff, which consisted of a few hundred Hell’s Angels-esque bikers) was connected to the same septic tank supplying the few toilets with water. A rusty spigot by our campsite became my shower; a pack of Starburst my dinner; a towel my blanket, raincoat and sweater all rolled into one. And I loved every second of it.

When it comes to buying people’s friendship with free stuff, we like to think we’re experts. Combined with live music, there is really nothing we love more. We’re going to be in Seattle this week for the Capitol Hill Block party and we’d love to meet up with some of our readers so that we might heap free stuff upon you.

Here’s the pertinent info on the Block Party, which still has tickets on sale for an unusually low price. Lots of great bands are playing from The Hold Steady to Girl Talk. You should go. You must go.

Just send me an email at jack.deyoung@grooveshark and we can arrange a meetup. Also, be sure to send your shirt size so we can get you a super cool Grooveshark shirt. Looking forward to it!

Natalie And Her Hula Hoop

by Rachel Knox July 18th, 2008

Two weeks ago, Jack and I trekked all the way to Michigan for the first annual Rothbury Festival. As a festival virgin, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from what Jack referred to as “a real-life Hippie Jam Fest“.

This is Part 3 of 3. Check out the first two installments here and here.

I heard it before I could see it. The roar of snarling guitars with their amps turned to 11 combined with impassioned vocals could only signify one thing. The Vans Warped Tour was in town. Over 50 bands invaded St. Petersburg to play their unique brand of music to a crowd that ranged in age from 12 to 70 (grandparents no doubt, St. Pete is swimming with them).

It was my first time in the photo pit, so bear with me if some of the pictures aren’t exactly Ansel Adams quality. On the plus side, you wont have to navigate through any of our indulgent blathering about any of the bands, you can just see them with their own eyes. A lot of the pictures were taken while attempting to avoid crowd surfing emo kids, so if they’re a little blurry you’ll know why. While we’re committed to bringing you the highest quality photos, having an imprint of a Chuck Taylor embedded into my skull was not worth it.

Because we took so many pictures on Friday we’re going to split this post into a three part series. You are currently reading Part 3.
