Here's what we're saying.

Preparing For Hurricane Fay

by Jack DeYoung August 18th, 2008

When I was younger, my cousins from up north used to brag that they got time off of school via snow days. My counter to their braggadocio was that while they got snow days, we got hurricane days and they were way more fun than running around in what really just amounted to miserable, cold ice. While most people might be afraid of an impending hurricane, Gainesville never seems to be hit hard because of our North Central Florida location. I’ve lived here for 20 years and the worst thing that ever happened because of a hurricane was a few fallen trees and loss of electricity.

Of course, by saying that I’ve ensured that the storm looming in the Carribean, Hurricane Fay, will undoubtedly ravage Gainesville and leave the Grooveshark offices in shambles. I’m hoping that nobody gets hurt, and that Hurricane Fay is more like this:

…and less like this:

Have you ever been shopping for band t-shirts and wished you could somehow get an album in the process? Does it really perturb you when Pottery Barn doesn’t offer stellar indie rock when you approach the counter with one of their novelty paper lanterns? If you answered yes to these questions, then satisfaction is right around the corner thanks to Kevin Barnes and Of Montreal.

The band is about to release their album Skeletal Lamping and have become disenchanted with the limitations of a digital release. They like their album art of the colorful and apparently wearable. A press release from the band revealed that Skeletal Lamping will be available in a whopping 7 different formats, including CD, LP, T-shirt, tote bag, button set, paper lantern, and wall decal set. I, for one, am pretty psyched about the tote bag.

According to Paste Magazine, The Eagles of Death Metal’s new album, set to release this fall, will be an album of “neck-lickin, boot-scootin, soul-scratchin, ass-shakin party tunes.” Sign me up.

The album, Heart On, will be released October 21st on Downtown Recordings.

It’s time to pack up your lasers and bongs Pink Floyd fans, because you’re going to the Bahamas. Kiqstart Music and Think Floyd USA are offering Pink Floyd fans the unique opportunity to sail around the Carribean while immersing themselves in all things Floyd. A tribute band will be on board to play all of the hits including a night entirely dedicated to Dark Side of the Moon. The ship sets sail on May 1st, 2009 and cabin prices start at $379. Attendees are asked to supply their own flying pigs.

I think this is a pretty novel idea namely because it’s not only forging a union between seaworthy Pink Floyd fans, but it’s also going to end up in the Bahamas. It’s certainly better than some of the other themed rock cruises that companies have offered that typically include a washed up 70’s band playing their 4 hit singles as patrons down $7 glasses of watered down vodka.

I wonder what would happen if certain other musicians embarked on themed cruises? What kind of amenities would they supply? What songs would they perform? Who would attend? These are all pressing questions, so I’d like to address them with a series of hypothetical cruises based on the lives of some of the most prominent figures in music.

I never liked The View, but as of lately, the show has somehow become part of my morning routine. Friday morning, I tuned in to see the ladies discussing the lyrics of Ludacris’ new song, “Politics: Obama is Here”. Joy was rapping or, er, reciting his lyrics:

Cheech & Chong Are Back In Rotation (News Break)

by John Bauer July 31st, 2008

After 23 years apart, Cheech & Chong have announced that they shall tour once again. Apart from voice-overs on South Park and some bit appearances in video games, it’s been since I was almost one year old that Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong have toured together. They have included around 22 dates touring across the US, including LA, NY, DC, 305, and, oddly enough, Phoenix, Arizona. Tickets go on sale August 8th at *ahem* 4:20pm. But with nine albums, eight films and a children’s book (!) between them, when did Cheech & Chong’s career really start *ahem* budding.
