De-stress with MSTRKRFT (Afternoon Sounds)

by Grace Stainback September 4th, 2008

I already knew that dance music was chock full of auditory therapy; nothing sends waves of pleasure through my cochlea like a heavy bassline and accompanying beat. If you thought that was laying it on thick, wait until you hear about what scientists in the UK and Germany are saying.

Apparently, a hip-shake a day keeps the doc away: research showed that listening to 50 minutes of dance music increased antibody levels, decreased stress hormone levels and may assist hospital-bound patients on the road to recovery.

I love that my ongoing love affair with electronica is now supported by scientific fact.

For those times that you need a little pick-me-upper. Stressed about money? School? The boy? The girl? Your insane neighbors? The upcoming presidential election and our possible impending doom? Maybe you are an insomniac. Your job is driving you nuts and causing you immense amounts of stress. Or maybe it’s just the middle of the week and you think the weekend will never be here. (more…)

On Monday, August 25th, the Democratic National Convention will be going on in Denver, Co. and Barack Obama will announce his Vice Presidential nominee. A star-studded list of celebrities will be attending the convention along with a great line up of performers for the week. The New York Times noted that the Democratic National Convention’s “crib-sheet” was an incredible 16 pages while the Republican National Convention was a lame-o five pages. Musical performers for the DNC range from Wyclef to Cold War Kids to Willie Nelson. The RNC is strictly sticking to country and The Beach Boys. I guess we know who knows how to party. (more…)

Something old, something new…stuff I’ve recently discovered, and old stuff I’ve dug out of my music collection.  This is my playlist for the week.

I found a mix CD my friend made me long ago of the Stars. He dragged me out of my house in 2004 in college (before I knew of the band) and we got to see them for free at Florida State University’s Club Downunder (just one great reason to go that school). It’s been a while since I’ve listened to them, so I’m adding them to my weekly playlist. To be honest, I always feel a bit sad when I listen to the Stars, but I really enjoy their music.

Last week marked the 39th anniversary of Woodstock, the 3 day music festival of peace and music. Next year, on it’s 40th anniversary, Warner Home Videos is releasing Blu-Ray and DVD editions of “Woodstock: Ultimate Collector’s Edition” which is four hours of music plus special features.

I definitely wasn’t even alive when Woodstock was going on. So I’ll listen to this playlist and keep thinking how I was wrongfully born in the hideous ’80s. (more…)
