To Cache or Not to Cache

Ben Westermann-Clark June 17th, 2008

or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Grooveshark Lite.

A number of weeks ago, we pulled all the songs we had cached (for reliability) thus far and made them available via the clean Flex interface you know and (hopefully) love as Grooveshark Lite. After that, all song caching within Grooveshark was temporarily disabled while we sorted out some bugs with Lite, got everything stable, and prepared to expand the catalog.

About two weeks ago, we started caching again. It didn’t last long, though, as our caching server was quickly overloaded since there are just so darn many of you!

On Friday, we re-established everything, felt confident, and implemented caching again. Everything was going swimmingly on Grooveshark (har); that is, until the server required a quick update, and everything went may-day. Because of this, some streaming and downloading within Grooveshark Beta may have been effected for a few hours earlier this afternoon, and, unfortunately, we’ve had to disable caching again.

So if you’re curious what was causing all the craziness earlier today, wondering if we’re ever actually going to start caching songs so that they can be added to Grooveshark Lite, or just pissed off because something else broke on the side, there’s your answer!

Of course, if you notice absolutely anything else being screwy for you, we’d love to hear about it so that we can give you some answers and track down (fix) the problems much more quickly. We depend on you guys, and we love you for all of your help.

Keep in touch!

  1. Hey…I’m coming here from the FreindFeed tinysong room. I’ve downloaded the Grooveshark app. Will the songs I have on my HD show up then in a tinysong search?

  2. yes, after the app has successfully “spidered” through your HD and uploaded the songs, then it should take a little bit but yes they will eventually appear on the tinysong site.

they have been having some problems with caching (as you can read above) however, i’m sure it will be resolved soon and then your songs will start showing up

  3. Hey guys,

Our goal is to get all of your tracks in both Grooveshark Lite and in Tinysong as soon as possible. Right now, we’re thinking that by the middle of July (2-3 weeks), the delay between caching songs and having them appear in TS/GSlite will be about 15 minutes–which is great! The only downside is that, in the meantime, there probably won’t be any big additions to the library.

So we’re shooting for mid-July, at which point, everything should be cool. :) Until then, hopefully you won’t hate us too much!

  4. Don’t hate at all…on the contrary! :)
Just wasn’t sure of how it works… and…like I said in FF: Just so happy about this service and keeping my fingers crossed it will remain!
