The music world lost a rocketing international jazz artist over the weekend as Esbjorn Svensson died during a scuba diving accident on Saturday.

Svensson went missing during a diving trip off an island near Stockholm and was later rushed to Karolinska University Hospital where doctors were unable to revive him.

Frontman for the Esbjorn Svensson Trio (E.S.T.) since 1993, Svensson had been a part of the Scandanavian jazz scene since the ’80s. The trio, including Magnus Oestrom and Dan Berglund, made international waves in 2002 with the release of Strange Place For Snow, which won several awards and garnered worldwide critical acclaim.

E.S.T. had their international breakthrough with From Gagarin’s Point Of View in 1999 and continued their 2002 success with similar critical acclaim for Seven Days Of Falling (2003), Viaticum (2005) and Tuesday Wonderland (2006).

The group was named Best International Artist at the 2003 BBC Jazz Awards and in May 2006, became the first European jazz band to be featured on the cover of the U.S. jazz magazine Down Beat.

Svensson was a husband and father of two. The band had just finished its 12th album, Leukocyte, which is slated for release in September.
