Conor Oberst and Bruce Springsteen Duet on “Thunder Road”: Good or Bad? You Decide.

Jack DeYoung March 31st, 2008

Last week found Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band’s world tour stopping in Omaha, Nebraska. During the encore, Springsteen beckoned Omaha’s native son Conor Oberst onstage to duet on “Thunder Road”. While on paper this pairing sounds pretty incredible, opinions of the performance ranged from “legendary” to “catastrophic”.

As a somewhat creepy Springsteen fanatic and mild Bright Eyes fan, I’ve watched this clip about 10 times to truly form an opinion on the quality of the performance. I eventually concluded that while Oberst occasionally looks confused and prone to forgetting the words to arguably Springsteen’s most famous(and best) song, he more than makes up for it with the gigantic smile on his face when he screams the last line.

I’m probably the wrong person to ask about this, as I would have passed out from nervousness if given the same opportunity. As a result, I’m fairly quick to embrace Oberst’s slightly unorthodox delivery of Springsteen’s most iconic song. What do you guys think? Am I just blinded by the light of my blatant Springsteen sycophancy? Or did Oberst actually do a pretty good job? You be the judge…
