As I’m sure many of you already know, Grooveshark’s motto is “Everybody Gets Paid.” But something tells me not everyone knows exactly how to get paid on Grooveshark. Sure we’ve done our best to explain how the system works, and we walk you through most of the process, but when it comes down to it, someone needs to layout the dirty little details. That person is me. It is with great pleasure that I provide you with Nathan’s Guide To Getting Filthy Rich on Grooveshark.
Disclaimer: Getting rich on Grooveshark does not equate to getting rich in real life. The money you earn in Grooveshark must be used to purchase more music within the system. But who can complain? You’re earning credit to get more music and making sure artists and labels get paid.
How to Make Money If You’re a User…
Rule 1 - Share Your Music
Within Grooveshark, your music library is your inventory. Nobody can “purchase” from you if you don’t share your inventory. Obviously the larger your music library, the more you can sell–so grow that library.
Rule 2 - Be An Active User
Grooveshark uses an algorithm to determine who should be compensated when more than one person is sharing the same song. This ensures fairness in the process and encourages users to become more active in the Grooveshark community. Factors that go into ranking users include: the number of songs rated, the number of tags added to music and the number of song tags correctly fixed within the system.
Rule 3 - Provide Original Content
Peer-to-Peer music-sharing services benefit when people have diverse music libraries. If you have the same songs as every other person on Grooveshark, it will require more work on your part to be the one who is compensated when a song is downloaded. It’s supply and demand. If you are the only one with the new Britney Spears CD on Grooveshark, then every time someone downloads a song from that CD, you’re the one who gets paid. So try to be the first to get a new song on Grooveshark, be the first to share music from an undiscovered band or just have music that no one else knows about. You’re not only helping improve the music selection available on Grooveshark, but you’re also more likely to make money.
Bonus Tip
Songs on the Grooveshark Billboard often sell the best. If you can get one of your songs on the Billboard, the chances of you making money off the song increase tremendously. The way to get a song on the Billboard is to stream it–a lot. In fact, you probably won’t be able to do it yourself, so recommend the song to your friends on Grooveshark and have them stream it, too. If the song is played enough, it’ll end up on the Billboard, and you’ll be in a good position to make some money.
How to Make Money If You’re an Artist or Label…
If you’re an independent artist or a music label looking to make money on Grooveshark, the process is surprisingly simple. Just head over to the Label Agreement page and fill in your information. We’ll need your music’s metadata, and if your music has not already found its way into the Grooveshark system, you can add it using Sharkbyte.
