That brutal cacophony you hear is the sound of legions of Smiths’ fans hearts breaking. It was reported this week that lead singer Morrissey has declined an offer of $75 million to reunite the seminal indie band. The stipulations of the offer were that Morrissey would only have to tour with former Smiths’ guitarist Johnny Marr. The singer is presumably still damaged from Marr’s decision to leave the band in 1987. Rumors of a Smiths reunion have been prevalent for several years but have all ultimately been denied by The Mozzer. As Marr enjoys his resurgence as co-writer and guitarist for Modest Mouse, Morrissey is still enjoying critical and commercial success as a solo artist. Smiths’ fans should not hold their breath as a press release from the singer stated rather emphatically that “one thing the future will not bring is a Smiths’ reunion tour.”
