Reasons To Add Music To Your Web Site

Nathan Thompson August 24th, 2007

We’ve already covered why not to add music to your Web site, so it’s only fair we confuse you by telling you why you should add music to your site.

Drost Designs has published a list of the top 4 reasons to add music to your site. But honestly the reasons are pretty cut and dry, so I’ll summarize them for you.

1. Music helps you stand out

2. Music is entertaining

3. Music is freely available on the Net

4. Music is easy to embed

Nothing surprising here. But these are definitely things you should consider when designing a Web site.

I think of music on a Web site in the same way I think of the music played in retail stores. The music helps create the atmosphere. And while everyone may not appreciate the music, they will associate it with the store. Could you imagine walking into Abercrombie and Fitch and not hearing techno/dance/pop music blasting through the speakers? What if you heard the same music in the garden department at Sears?

This is why you need to make sure both the presence and type of music are appropriate for your particular Web site. You should try to match the music with the particular audience you are trying to reach.
