Franz Ferdinand….Pro-Piracy?

Joshua Bonnain August 20th, 2007

While I’m not quite sure what sort of press mega popular band Franz Ferdinand desires from promoting piracy, the guys seem to have a genuine stance towards downloading music for free.

“I like the idea that, because of downloading, people are going to buy songs only if they are good. I think that’s a positive thing. It means lazy bands aren’t going to get away with giving you one hit single and an album full of filler. We like the idea that every song should stand up in its own right so you don’t have to listen to a song in the context of an album to understand it. I suppose that’s why I’m sympathetic to the download environment,” said singer and guitarist Alex Kapranos.

In case you couldn’t tell, he’s essentially painting to current state of recorded music to be somewhat lacking in quality. The group has even gone as far as to urge fans to download their latest track—a David Bowie cover. Something seems amiss, though, for the nature of integrity to have become so distorted.

Now, I don’t support freely downloading music. Even if the recording environment was indeed in a tough spot and artists were ripping off hopeful music lovers the world over and for some reason not being fairly compensated for their work– which the media barons in the recording industry would be currently hording for themselves, piracy still isn’t the answer.

It’s time for a little more creativity than blaming your overlords for something that is more like a press release than a cool and fresh way to look at the music industry.

Groove on, guys.
