Music brings us all together—that much is true.
There are times and places, though, that something so important as music fails to serve a tangible purpose: your web site. Seth Gardenswartz makes a good case as to why you should avoid music in this medium, for the sake of your visitors and for your success.
Including music on your Web site brings many negative consequences, from slowing down the performance of the site to chasing away visitors (many people browse while at work) to taking the gamble of annoying your visitor altogether. Music on a site utilizes complete disregard for your user’s patience, intelligence and, most importantly, their Internet experience.
The other great point that Gardenswartz makes is Web sites exist to perform certain highly fixed functions. Whether to help with finances, provide videos or sell services, Web sites shouldn’t add superfluous items such as background music. Do us all a favor and don’t worry about putting an on or off button for a certain song on your site—save it for your shiny Grooveshark account, where it belongs.
Groove on!
