In three months, Grooveshark has convinced three record labels that a DRM-free P2P network that pays everyone involved is the future of digital music. We either have some amazing persuasion skills, or the digital music industry is ripe for change. We tend to think the latter.
Magnatune, often noted as “the first Internet-era record label,†joins the ranks of London-based V2 Music Group and the world’s leading classical music label, Naxos, as Grooveshark continues its quest to create the largest possible music catalog, while compensating artists and fans alike.
Magnatune is an independent, online record label and music store that sells and licenses over 200 independent recording artists in every genre. The label supports fair-trade music, shares all revenue equally with recording artists and allows music to be previewed in full, free of charge, making it an excellent match for Grooveshark.
Forward Progress
As stated by our fearless leader and CEO, Sam Tarantino, this mutually beneficial relationship will not only allow Grooveshark to increase its growing catalog of artists, it will provide a place for independent musicians to receive exposure, while still getting paid.
“We applaud Grooveshark’s approach of making the largest possible catalog of music available while compensating artists and the members of their community,†said John Buckman, Magnatune founder and CEO. “It’s clear to us the music industry needs to change, and that’s why we founded Magnatune, and we’re excited to see a unique distribution channel like Grooveshark to complement our efforts.â€
It’s this kind of forward thinking that the music industry needs to embrace, because change is inevitable, improvement is not. By supporting digital music models such as Grooveshark, which seek to improve everyone’s position without taking away from the artists or consumers, you help promote more than just change. You support progress.
