Mitch Bainwol is an idiot. So are the record executives and artists who think the RIAA’s new strategy is a good idea. Going after your own customers is ridiculous enough, but now the RIAA is going after the very people that have helped make the music industry the goliath that it is today.
That’s right, the RIAA is going after radio stations. No they aren’t suing them for copyright infringement or to make them add some crazy new form of DRM to broadcasts. That would be the only thing more idiotic that what they are actually doing. The RIAA wants the radio stations to now pay royalties; I’m sorry Mitch, could you please speak into my good ear?
I thought I just heard you say you were going to try and collect money from the very people who made the artists you, “represent,” who they are. Having your song played on the radio is a privilege, not a right.
Mitch Bainwol is about to pick a fight with a sleeping giant that is made up of Clear Channel, Cumulus Broadcasting and Citadel Communications Corp, just to name …the three biggest. To quote the genius of “Iron” Mike Tyson, “This is ludicrous.”
Mitch, class is now in session. Welcome to making the RIAA our bitch 101. That’s right Mitch, prepared to be owned. The radio industry has been going toe-to-toe with the likes of the FCC and every fanatical christian family values organization from here to Kalamazoo. Clear Channel definitely knows how to dance, and I guarantee you they will gladly ask you to step outside.
I guess the only good that could come of this is when the radio station owners and the RIAA get into a Mexican standoff, audiophiles will have to go somewhere else to discover music. Don’t worry kids, Grooveshark will have your needs covered when it comes to DRM-free mp3s and oggs :)

My question is, how can the RIAA collect royalties from radio stations who are payed by the major lables to play the music? Almost all the music on the air has been payed for by someone. The whole thing is a joke.
