How It Works

Nathan Thompson April 8th, 2006

When someone downloads a song, Grooveshark shares a portion of the cost of the song with the user who uploaded the song. But because multiple users may have the same song, Grooveshark uses an algorithm to determine who should receive the compensation.

The Grooveshark algorithm is set up to reward active users for sharing their music by compensating them with credit to purchase songs. Those user which actively contribute to the system will be rewarded more often than those who do not.

Community contributions include the following:

-Making friends
-Tagging songs
-Rating songs
-Commenting
-Building playlists
-Purchasing songs
-Growing your music library

  2. I have tried to listen to your music, but the music will not play on your site. Perhaps you did not select a port to play from when downloaded. At any event, I cannot hear the music, so why should I bother.

  3. @Elizabeth Are you attempting to listen to music on http://lite.grooveshark.com or in http://beta.grooveshark.com . We’ve been working on making everything in the Beta more stable in the past couple of days with Sharkbyte, so if you’re having any troubles (obviously it sounds like you are), pretty-please shoot me an e-mail and I’ll do everything I can to help out: feedback@grooveshark.com .

Hope to hear from you soon!

  4. Is there any incentive for artists to share their songs here? It seems users only get rewarded for sharing bandwidth… not sharing their art!

  5. Will I be able to burn my downloaded songs to a cd and play them in a normal cd player?
